Editorial Review

Betawi traditional eateries are very much common in Jakarta, simple but satisfying to those who are not fussy with 'where' they dine and whether the preparation of food obeys all health regulations. However, Kafe Betawi with a refinement to Betawi style dining is one that is most likely to eliminate the hazards of local eateries. It is nested in one of the most vibrant spots for casual dining and offers a view of people strolling by, just like most of the restaurants at Cilandak Town Square do.

The restaurant's interior is accented by white painted wood, fashioned into a terrace style dining area, which reflects the appearance of Betawi traditional houses. The staffs also wear traditional Betawi attire, which further adds to the cultural dining experience and the only indications of modern times are the customers in their flashy wardrobes and the sound of ringing mobile telephones.

There is a variety of traditional Indonesian cuisine to select from, many of which include Nasi Uduk, Lontong Cap Gomeh, Karedok, Pempek etc. Nasi Uduk Empal, which is a common roadside delicacy is essentially pandan flavored rice, Empal, served with sambal (ground chili paste) on the side. However, Kafe Betwai puts a slight twist by adding an omelet, tempe kering (blocks of Fried soy seeds) and vegetables. For an entree, you may also like to have the Sate Ayam, adequate portions of chicken pieces grilled on a wooden stake, served with sweet and salty peanut sauce. Those who wish to have something similar to a salad can also try the Karedok which is essentially a mix of fresh raw vegetables served with peanut sauce. Favorite Deserts include Es Cincau Hijau and Es Campur which is a mix of coconut milk, avocado, tape, kolang-kaling, jack-fruit and dark jelly. Various fruit juices are also offered in their menu.

If you are tired of the westernized facet of current restaurants and their overrated sophisticated dishes, then this is the place to stop by next time you're in the area.
