Review: FLIGHT

When it comes to Denzel Washington, you know what to expect: solid rock performance and strong character. ‘Flight’ is no exception. Directed by the long absentee in live action Robert Zemeckis, 2 times Oscar winner Washington delivered a memorable, yet underrated acting in Captain Whip Whitaker.

It was an ordinary morning for seasoned pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington). If only. What supposed to be a piece of cake-routine flight turns out a disaster. Some malfunctions combined with bad weather resulted in a bizarre maneuver by Whip, rotating the plane 180 degrees in order to restore the balance, while planning an emergency landing. The maneuver was a success. Although the plane crashed, minimum damages and casualties were accomplished. 6 people died, including 2 crews, but Whip emerged as a hero, whom extreme decision saves more lives. It was not the end, though. Post crash investigation found out, Whip was not actually qualified to fly that morning. Alcohol level and drugs influence were far above allowed, and these could lead to Whip’s early retirement, spending time in prison. He was not alone, fortunately. Some good friends fight for him, highlighting no one could ever land the plane like Whip have done. And while he was recovering from his injuries, love and inspiration came from every possible way, support him through the worst he soon encounters.

‘Flight’ tell us a story of efforts, and how we cope with difficult circumstances when everything seems against us. The inner conflict of Whip portrayed perfectly by Washington, conflicting whether he should remain sober and stop drinking, or do things casually, as he is most certain guilty. The subplot with Nicole (Kelly Reilly), the attractive drug addict, was sweet but unnecessary it could’ve been cut out entirely. The intense scenes moments before the plane crashed was convincing and will make you hold your breath; it was done well. While ‘Flight’ is arguably an Oscar worthy for Best Picture, only two categories made it through the nominations: Best Actor in a Leading Role for Washington, and Best Original Screenplay for John Gatins. Still, the wonderful performance from Denzel Washington is more than enough for those who love character driven drama to watch ‘Flight’.
